Swertia Chirayita is a medicinal plant indigenous to temperate Himalaya. It is usually substituted in place of Andrographis paniculata but both are different herbs. It has an erect, about 2–3ft long stem. The stems are orange-brown or purplish in color. Leaves are opposite - arranged in mutually perpendicular pairs, 3.5-10 x 1.5-4 cm, hairless, blunt or heart-shaped at the base, tapering at the tip. Flowering in Chirayita is in the form of numerous small, axillary, opposite, lax cymes arranged as short branches and the whole inflorescence is 2ft long. Flowers are small, stalked, green-yellow, tinged with purple color. Swertia Chirayita occurs sporadically in subtropical and temperate forests, in open forest margins, cool and moist places, or in shady moist slopes among tall grasses. The whole plant is uprooted at the fruiting stage in the month of September and October and is dried in shade.
